Meet Adam Singsay. His art moves me in ways I can’t describe! While others are out partying, Adam is busy working on his craft. No matter the medium, he will always find a way to create a masterpiece whether it be with markers, paperclips, or spray paint! My favorites so far that I’ve seen from him would have to be the pieces that pay homage to our homeland. He’s on his way to the top, so make sure you show him some love and recognize true talent.
Are you a 100% Cambodian? If not, what else?
Adam: Actually i am not full Cambodian, i am mix with Laos from my mom side. of course got the Cambodian side from my dad.
When did you come to the states and where do you reside? Or were you born here, if so, where?
Adam: After my parents Fled from the war in Cambodia, they came to the United States, where I was Born in Longbeach CA, raised in St. Petersburg FL. I moved to Florida when I was 3, because my mom decided to move with my dad to see his family here.
At what age did you know you were an artist?
Adam: I started drawing with my uncle when I was 6-7 years old, he would teach us how to draw many different things that would inspire me to become a great artist myself, putting my talents to the test to catch up with him.
What inspires to create?
Adam: Nature and beauty all around inspires me to do art, capture that moment and time, put it down on a piece of paper, and carry it on for the future, the thing that inspired me most was looking at another artist work, someone who i look up to meeting one day, (El Mac) he paint such beautiful murals that inspires me wanting to do the same.
What medium(s) do you use in your artwork?
Adam: I would use anything i have to create art, doesn’t take much to start off, like this one time i was in school, didn’t allow any drawing in class, but i did anyways, i took a piece of paper clip and started sketching on my paper, it left grey marks behind, and i just went all out doing a piece of art from a single paper clip. came out pretty nice. but then i thought it was weird. me not having a pencil, and using what ever i can find.
Do you have any published work, if so and where? If not where would you want your work to be published?
Adam: No, not really, i wish i did, As of now i am trying to get myself publish in Magazines and hopefully have a few art pieces in a studio, takes time to get yourself together. i want to be featured in a art studio if possible.
Do you have to be in a zone before you start your work, or is it just whenever you’re inspired?
Adam: It’s whenever im inspired, i would carry my sketchbook with me while im out the house, trying to get idea’s, so i would most likely start my work anywhere, and the weirdest place iv ever been inspired to do art, was at a restaurant, the visuals in my head i see, makes me want to draw and draw like there’s no tomorrow.
What is your favorite khmer dish?
Adam: So many great Khmer Dishes i love, but my favorite by far would be (Kari) known as (Khmer Curry) love it with a little bit of spice, Rice or even French Bread goes along really well!
What are your future goals in art?
Adam: To show my culture what i can do, to keep it alive, and never let it die out, my goal is to get somewhere with the talent i have as the person i am, my family came along way to bring me here.
What advice would you give to others?
Adam: If you believe in yourself, you will succeed, never give up on hope’s, because you can do it.
